TMJ and Sleep Apnea Care for Nassau County
Nassau County is one of the few places around New York where people search specifically for a TMJ specialist rather than for their symptom, which suggests a population that has already worked out what it is looking for. It is also home to one of the largest health systems in the country, so most patients arrive with a history rather than a blank page.
A well-served county, with one persistent gap
Northwell Health is headquartered in New Hyde Park, and between Long Island Jewish, North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, NYU Langone Hospital–Long Island in Mineola and St. Francis in Roslyn, Nassau residents have unusually good access to sleep medicine and to dentistry. What remains scarce here, as everywhere, is the specific overlap: clinicians credentialed in both temporomandibular disorders and dental sleep medicine, which is what allows an appliance to be designed around a joint rather than in spite of it.
Second opinions are a common reason to come
A recurring Nassau presentation is someone who has been offered extensive irreversible treatment — full-mouth reconstruction, or occlusal adjustment — as a first-line treatment for jaw pain. That is worth a second opinion from anyone, including us. Current evidence does not support irreversible occlusal adjustment as a treatment for temporomandibular disorders, which is why reversible appliance therapy is tried first: enamel does not grow back, and an adjusted bite cannot be un-adjusted.
If you already have a sleep study
Bring it, including the detail most people never look at: sleep studies usually report the event index separately for supine and non-supine sleep. If your supine index is at least double the other, your apnea is positional, and that changes what is worth trying — positional therapy is genuinely effective in that group and costs nothing to attempt. Ask your physician to point out those two numbers.
Getting seen from Nassau
The Long Island Rail Road makes a Manhattan appointment straightforward from most of the county, and the first consultation happens by video regardless. Records, fitting and titration follow in person. Bring prior imaging, your sleep study, a medication list, and a short note of what has already been tried and how you responded — that last item narrows the picture more than people expect.
Common questions
- I have been told I need full-mouth reconstruction for my jaw pain. Is that normal?
- As a first treatment for jaw pain, no, and it warrants a second opinion. Reconstruction is legitimate where a bite has genuinely collapsed or worn out, and even then it follows joint stabilisation rather than substituting for it. Reversible treatment comes first.
- My appliance was made by a dentist and my jaw now hurts. What happened?
- That is a recognised outcome when a device is designed for the airway without regard for the joint — advancing the mandible nightly is a sustained load. It is usually addressable by reassessing the joint and adjusting or redesigning the appliance rather than abandoning treatment.
- Do you coordinate with Northwell or NYU Langone clinicians?
- We coordinate with whichever clinicians are already involved in your care — sharing findings, records and outcomes. That is standard practice rather than a formal affiliation with any particular system.
