Frequently Asked Questions

The questions that come up most often before a first appointment. Anything clinical is covered on the relevant condition or treatment page; these are the practical ones.

01

How the virtual consultation works

After you send a request, a private video visit is scheduled with Dr. Samadian to review your symptoms, go through your history, answer questions and outline options. You can join from anywhere in New York. It is longer than people expect, because a thorough history does most of the diagnostic work in this field — and video is a better setting for that than a compressed first appointment.

02

What happens if you need to be seen in person

A definitive diagnosis often needs hands-on examination of the joint and muscles, and appliance therapy needs records, fitting and adjustment. Where in-person care is appropriate it is arranged and your New York location is confirmed at booking. Consultations start virtually so that the assessment is not compressed into a first in-person visit.

03

What is treated here, and what is not

The focus is temporomandibular disorders, jaw pain, TMJ-related headaches, orofacial pain and sleep-related breathing concerns including grinding and snoring. Routine dentistry — check-ups, hygiene, fillings, crowns unrelated to a bite problem — stays with your own dentist. Sleep apnea is diagnosed by a physician; we treat it once diagnosed, and help you get tested if you have not been.

Common questions

How does the virtual consultation work?
After you send a request, we schedule a private video visit with Dr. Samadian to review your symptoms, answer questions, and outline options. You can join from anywhere in New York.
Where in New York will I be seen?
Patients are seen by appointment in New York. Because care starts with a virtual consultation, your specific appointment location is confirmed when you book an in-person visit.
Is there any charge to request a consultation?
No. Requesting a consultation is free and carries no obligation.
Do you treat patients in San Francisco too?
Yes. Dr. Samadian also cares for patients at his San Francisco practice. New York patients are served through this practice.
What conditions do you focus on?
TMJ disorders, jaw pain, TMJ-related headaches, orofacial pain, and sleep-related concerns such as grinding and snoring.
Do I need a referral?
No. Many people come on their own; many are referred by a dentist, physician or physical therapist. Bring any imaging, sleep studies or notes you already have either way.
Will I be given a night guard at the first visit?
Not usually. An appliance should be designed for what is actually wrong — joint, muscle or airway — and that needs establishing first. Some designs make symptoms worse when they target the wrong problem.
Is this medical advice?
No. This site is for general education. A consultation is needed to determine whether treatment is appropriate for you.
