Jaw Pain During Pregnancy

TMJ symptoms appearing or worsening during pregnancy is common enough to be predictable, and it worries people more than it needs to — largely because so much standard advice for jaw pain involves medication or imaging that feels off-limits. Most of what actually helps is neither.

01

Why symptoms flare

Relaxin and other hormonal changes increase ligamentous laxity throughout the body to prepare for delivery, and the temporomandibular joint's ligaments are not exempt. A joint that is already borderline can become less stable. Add disrupted sleep, altered sleeping position, increased reflux, and the postural changes of later pregnancy, and several TMD contributors rise at once.

02

What is appropriate during pregnancy

Conservative care carries the treatment here: moist heat, soft diet, awareness training to keep the teeth apart, gentle physical therapy, sleep positioning, and a custom appliance where indicated — appliance therapy is non-pharmacological and generally well tolerated. Any medication decision belongs with your obstetric provider, and elective imaging is usually deferred. This is one presentation where the conservative-first principle is not a preference but the plan.

03

What usually happens afterwards

Symptoms driven mainly by hormonal laxity commonly settle in the months after delivery as ligament laxity resolves. Symptoms that persist well beyond that, or that were present before pregnancy, warrant the same evaluation as anyone else's — pregnancy is often the trigger that exposed an existing problem rather than the cause of it.

Common questions

Is an oral appliance safe during pregnancy?
Appliance therapy involves no medication and no radiation, and it is generally well tolerated. As with anything during pregnancy, tell both your dental and obstetric providers what is planned so care stays coordinated.
Will my jaw pain go away after the baby is born?
Frequently it improves as ligament laxity returns to baseline. Pain that persists beyond a few months postpartum is worth evaluating properly rather than waiting on.
