Posture Training

The jaw hangs from the skull, and the skull is balanced on the neck. Change how the head sits over the shoulders and you change the resting length of the muscles that suspend and position the jaw. For people whose jaw symptoms are worst after a working day, posture is frequently doing more of the damage than anything they eat or chew.

01

The mechanism, specifically

When the head moves forward of the shoulders, the muscles at the back of the neck work harder to stop it dropping, and the muscles under the jaw are placed on stretch. The mandible tends to be pulled into a slightly different resting relationship, so the muscles that close the jaw work harder simply to keep the mouth shut. That is a small extra load applied continuously for hours — which is exactly the load profile muscles handle worst.

02

Where it comes from

Laptops below eye level, phones held low, prolonged desk work, and sleeping positions that hold the neck in flexion or rotation. None of these are dramatic and all of them are sustained, which is the problem — cumulative low-level load, not injury.

03

What actually changes it

Environment first: screen height, chair and desk relationship, phone position, and pillow choice. These hold, because they do not depend on remembering. Then targeted work — strengthening the deep neck flexors, releasing the muscles at the base of the skull, and mobility work for the upper back. Postural cueing alone rarely survives a busy week; changing the environment that produced the posture does.

Common questions

Will fixing my posture fix my jaw?
For some people it removes a substantial contributor and symptoms improve markedly. For others it is one factor among several. It is rarely the whole answer and rarely irrelevant.
Does my pillow matter?
It can. A pillow that holds the neck in significant flexion or rotation for hours applies exactly the kind of sustained load that aggravates both neck and jaw. It is a cheap variable to test.
